Exercise Therapy

What to Avoid

The following exercises can make your symptoms worse:

  • Exercises that arch your lower back — These narrow the spinal canal further
  • Pushing through pain to keep walking — It's fine to stop and rest
  • Heavy weightlifting — Such as barbell squats
  • Jerky or bouncing movements — Always move slowly and with control

Stop exercising and contact your doctor if:

  • Numbness or weakness in your legs suddenly gets worse
  • You develop problems with urination or bowel control
  • Pain persists even at rest
