Medications for Spinal Stenosis
Will I Need to Take Medication Forever?
No, not necessarily.
If your pain improves and remains stable for a period of time, it is often possible to gradually reduce and eventually stop your medication.
The typical course of medication therapy:
Weeks 2-4 (Dose assessment) — Are the side effects tolerable? Is the medication showing any effect?
Months 1-3 (Effectiveness assessment) — Is your pain easing? Is your daily life improving?
Months 3-6 (Necessity assessment) — Can the dose be reduced? Are you noticing that you forget to take it sometimes?
When improvement is confirmed — Gradual dose reduction, then discontinuation
If you find yourself occasionally forgetting your medication because you're feeling better, that may be a sign of improvement. Rather than stopping on your own, talk to your doctor about a plan to taper off gradually.
