What Is Chronic Low Back Pain?
What Makes Back Pain "Chronic"?
Low back pain is generally classified into three stages:
| Stage | Duration | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Acute | 0–6 weeks | Sudden onset (e.g., after lifting). Most episodes resolve on their own |
| Subacute | 6 weeks–3 months | Pain persists. How you manage it during this window matters |
| Chronic | 3 months or longer | Pain continues and begins to affect daily life significantly |
In other words, low back pain that lasts 3 months or more is considered "chronic."
However, "chronic" does not mean "permanent." Research consistently shows that appropriate exercise, treatment, and self-management can lead to meaningful improvement.
